Electronic Records

Our practice is currently using electronic medical records (aka EMR).  The advantages of electronic records are multi-fold:

  • patients' medical records are accessible from every desktop computer, laptop, or tablet in the office which eliminates the need to search for a patient's chart throughout the office
  • medical records are clean and easy to read
  • loose sheets are no longer lost from patients' records
  • lab results, Pap smear results, and all other information is either electronically sent directly or scanned into the corresponding patient's chart
  • patient's pictures are downloaded into their own file and a picture of the patient can be visualized providing better recognition of the patient especially during phone conversations

The EMR is accessible from anywhere an internet connection can be made via desktop, laptop, or smartphone.  What this translates to is having your records immediately accessible from either the hospital, the office, the home of Dr. Flores, or even anywhere in town in the event of an emergency when the acquisition of your records is vital and possibly even life-saving.

 Special Features

One of the features of the EMR is the ability to detect any possible drug interactions that may occur when a new medication is prescribed by your doctor.  The system checks for possible interactions that may occur with the medications you are already taking.  This allows your doctor to choose the appropriate medication best suited for your condition.

Another feature that is available is the patient portal.  Through the portal, a patient can access several areas of their own chart and even make requests to make an appointment online.  Each patient that wishes to access the portal can create an online account with a username and a password that is unique to each patient, similar to the ones that many individuals use to access their bank accounts, credit cards, and other miscellaneous sites online.

Compliance with HIPAA

The EMR is also compliant with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). HIPAA standards are enforced to ensure the security and privacy of patients' medical information.  The networks are secured by firewalls, VPN tunnels, and passwords.
