Benefits of the Patient Portal
The patient portal has been developed to allow new patients and existing patients online access to our office. The following features are now available through the patient portal:
- All patients can ask questions about their health care online in an email fashion and potentially avoid "playing phone tag" until both parties are finally available at the same time. The email conversations become part of the electronic record as well.
- Patient accounts can be paid online using a credit card through a secure and encrypted connection similar to paying other household bills online.
- All patients can request copies of their test results online.
- Most prescription refills not requiring an office visit can be requested through the patient portal.
Security Measures
The patient portal is only a gateway through which patients can access the office. The patient will be asked to create a username and password for their portal account and will also need an email address that information can be sent to regarding the account created. Each account that is created by a patient online must be "linked" to a patient's electronic record. Certain identifiers are used to ensure that the patient creating the portal account is indeed the same patient within our office's system. The portal only links one online account to one electronic record. Therefore, it does not allow random access to other electronic records other than the electronic record that it has been linked to. Furthermore, the portal does not allow unlimited access to the chart that it is linked to. If a patient would like to access their test results, a request for specific test results can be made. Once the request has been processed, those test results will be available for review or for printing.
Another security measure that is in place is that information can only be reviewed from within the portal. In other words, test results, emails, or any other information are never sent directly to the email address that has been used to create the portal account. The only information that is sent to the patient's email address is a notification that there is a message that needs attention in the portal. From there, the patient must log into the patient portal to access the message.
